Kenny King is many things; a friend, a hard worker, an open book, an ARTIST. That last one took some time for Kenny to accept. Finding the courage to fully embrace his vocal gift was the challenge. But he persevered and answered the bell; he decided to share his gift with the world. And now, Kenny shares his journey with us at Symphonic Skin.
Upon reflection, Kenny shares his apprehension about singing as a career, “I’ve always had a passion for music since I was a child. From show choir to church choir, it has always allowed me to express myself when I wasn’t really sure what to say. But through music I’ve been able to emote with my voice and truly show my emotions. At the age of 30, I finally stopped being afraid and started to believe in myself. 30 pushed me to go after my dreams because I realized it’s never too late.”
It is often said that the journey is just as important as the finish and Kenny has absorbed every lesson along the way, “My most valuable lesson thus far has been to believe in myself as an artist. I’ve always had the talent. But I looked to others for confirmation. I’ve learned that no one can believe in you truly if you don’t even believe in yourself.” And now he truly believes in his place in the music industry.
Fame in music can be fleeting and one hit wonders are more common than not, Kenny understands this, “Relevancy is a hard topic. There is so much music out there and so many great talented artists. Even though the music is top priority it’s very important to stay engaged and also be open to listening to different artists. I am always finding new artists and listening to their vibes and looking for new sounds that I can mix with a classic R&B sound. Always staying educated in music is very important to me.”
Kenny credits his greatest influence as continued education, “Honestly going to cosmetology school has helped me to find my niche. That’s as an artist and as a stylist. I’ve learned that I can influence through music and beauty and become a businessman through art and encouragement.”
Gazing into the future, the world had better buckle up for the ride Kenny King will provide. “I’m currently finishing up these last few months of cosmetology school and working on a joint project. I’m also working on my debut EP, but it’s my baby, so I’m taking my time with this one. New music all 2020!
